higher-order representations of complex systems

Love this discussion about higher-order representations by Manlio De Domenico. I particularly like the contribution by Alex Arenas and colleagues (and this response by Manlio) to think about it all in terms of modeling goals. It reminds me that Complexity and Network Science are still advancing notions put forward in Systems Science, by George Klir (and others) with his General Systems Problem Solver (GSPS). While we have since advanced a lot in both modelling frameworks and statistical and information measures of prediction performance and parsimony, GSPS still provides an unmatched unifying notational and mathematical language to work on system representation, model inference and validation, and parsimonious theory development (metasystem study).
